Stormy Sea

c. 1930

Emil Nolde

Artist, German, 1867 - 1956

Waves painted with strokes of sapphire blue and muted emerald green surge across the bottom third of this horizontal watercolor. The top two-thirds are dominated by towering piles of clouds painted in violet purple and marigold orange. The sky above around the clouds is shaded with turquoise and soft blue. The artist signed the lower right corner, “Nolde.”
