Artwork history & notes
Provenance
The artist (L.4337); gift 1918 to the Kunstverein Jena, in honor of Botho Graef [1857-1917]; Ferdinand Möller, Berlin. [1] (Galerie Henze & Ketterer, Bern); Ruth Cole Kainen [1922-2009], Washington, D.C. (Lugt 4740), purchased May 20, 1996; gift to NGA, 2012.
[1] Confiscated in 1937 by the German government as "degenerate art," no. EK 13092 and sold by Möller, one of the agents appointed by the German government's Commission for the Exploitation of Degenerate Art to sell objects purged from German institutions. However, in a letter from Wolfgang Wittrock to Ruth Kainen dated May 11, 1984, he indicates that this composition remained in the private collection of the Möller family for some fifty years.
