Private collection, New York;[1] (sale, Robert W. Skinner, Inc., Bolton, Massachusetts, 22 May 1979, no. 13); (unidentified dealer, Maine);[2] purchased 1979 by (Jeffrey R. Brown Fine Arts, North Amherst); (Adams Davidson Galleries, Washington); sold 1980 to Richard Manoogian [b. 1936], Detroit;[3] sold 2003 to (Menconi and Schoelkopf, New York); sold November 2003 to (Catherine Dail Fine Art, New York); purchased November 2003 by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] It is possible the painting descended in the family of a contemporary or relative of the artist, if not from the artist himself. Brevoort sold the contents of his studio at Leavitt Art Rooms in New York on 13-14 February 1873 before moving to Italy. Although no painting by the current title of the NGA painting is listed in the sale catalogue, it may be the same as no. 115, Beach and Rocks, Gloucester, Mass.. See the 2003 acquisition proposal prepared by Corcoran Gallery of Art curator Sarah Cash, in NGA curatorial files.
[2] E-mail, 22 October 2003, Robin Starr of Skinner, Inc., to Sarah Cash, in NGA curatorial files.
[3] E-mail, 6 October 2003, Ted Cooper of Adams Davidson Galleries, to Sarah Cash, in NGA curatorial files.
