Sir Richard Wallace [1818-1890], London and Paris;[1] by inheritance to his wife, Amélie-Julie-Charlotte Castelnau, Lady Wallace [1819-1897], Paris and London; by inheritance to her adviser and secretary, Sir John Murray Scott [1847-1912], London and Paris;[2] by inheritance to his friend, Victoria Sackville-West, Lady Sackville [1864-1936], Paris; sold 1914 with her entire inheritance from Scott to (Jacques Seligmann & Fils, Paris and New York); purchased 1921 by William Andrews Clark [1839-1925]; bequest April 1926 to the Corcorcan Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] The sculpture is listed in the Hertford House inventory made in 1890 after Wallace's death; see the faxed letter of 6 December 2000 from Robert Wenley of The Wallace Collection, London, to Laura Coyle of the Corcoran (in NGA curatorial files).
[2] The 1912 inventory of the Wallace residence at Rue Lafitte in Paris, made after Scott's death, included on p. 68, in the Grand Galerie: "Groupe en bronze patiné, 'Prometée dévoré par un aigle' (signé Renaud, mil sept cent soixante treize)...8000" (see the Wenley letter referenced in note 1).
