Mirror Lake, near the Wisconsin Dells

c. 1900

Henry Hamilton Bennett

Artist, American, born Canada, 1843 - 1908

We look across a glassy lake at a V-shaped slice of cloudy sky between banks of trees that reach from the top corners of this horizontal black and white photograph to just below the center of the composition. The forest and sky are reflected in the water below, turning the V of sky into an X. A wooden dock extends into view from the lower right corner, and a few branches from a tree out of sight dip down across the right half of the top edge.
