Artwork history & notes

Provenance

The sitter's grandson, Dr. J. F. Walsh; his son, Henry C. Walsh, New York; Frank Bulkeley Smith [1864-1918], Worcester, Massachusetts; (his estate sale, American Art Association, New York, 22-23 April 1920, no. 136); W. J. Kain, New York;[1] Thomas B. Clarke [1848-1931], New York; his estate; sold as part of the Clarke collection 29 January 1936, through (M. Knoedler & Co., New York), to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, Pittsburgh; gift 1947 to NGA.
[1] W. J. Kain was reported as the buyer of the painting in newspaper coverage of the Smith sale. His name is given as William Kane in other records in NGA curatorial files. He may have been acting for Thomas B. Clarke, as Clarke records indicate he bought the painting at the same sale. (This note does not appear in the provenance as published in the NGA systematic catalogue entry.)
