Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Commissioned by the sitter, Margaret, Duchesse de Fitz-James, [née Margaret Loewenhjelm], Château de la Lorie, Anjou. Alfred II-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley [1847-1919], Paris, by 1906.[1] Lintilhac, Paris. Albert Dubosc, Le Havre, by 1936.[2] (Galerie André Weil, Paris); sold 14 March 1950 to Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York;[3] bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] The painting was lent by Beurdeley to a 1906 exhibition in Paris, and published in a 1911 catalogue raisonné as in his collection. Beurdeley was the son of Louis-Auguste-Alfred I Beurdeley [1808-1882]; both were fine cabinetmakers, collectors and donors to the Louvre. After the younger Beurdeley's death, there were over twelve sales of his collection, consisting primarily of prints, tapistries and objects d'art. The sale of modern and old master paintings held at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris on 6-7 May 1920 did not include this painting.
[2] The painting was lent by Dubosc to a 1936 exhibition in Grenoble, but was not included in a 5 December 1947 sale of the Dubosc collection held at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris.
[3] See the letter dated 14 April 1950 from Weil to Dale, in NGA curatorial files.
