Gustave Cahen [b. 1825], Paris; (his sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 24 May 1929, no. 59, as Portrait de jeune femme); acquired, possibly through (Etienne Bignou)[1] by Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York; bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] There is a photograph of the painting among the albums from the Bignou Gallery at the documentation center of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris (copy in NGA curatorial files). Bignou often purchased for Dale, and was also affiliated with the Galerie Georges Petit with Dale.
