The head of a pale-skinned man nearly fills this shadowy, vertical portrait painting. His shoulders angle to our right, and his dark eyes cut back to look at us. Light from the top left corner highlights his light blond hair, and he has a full beard. He has a straight nose, and his high cheekbones and eye sockets are cast in deep shadow. A high white collar peeks over the lapels of a slate-blue jacket. The background is thinly painted, appearing almost scratched on in some areas, with black against a lighter ground. The brushstrokes are loose and visible throughout the painting. The artist signed the work in the lower right corner in rust-red paint, "E. Vuillard."

Shown from about the ribcage up, a cleanshaven man with pale skin sits with his elbow resting on the arm of his chair so the back of those fingers brush his chin in this vertical portrait painting. His body and face are angled to our right almost in profile so he looks at us from the corners of his brown eyes under dark, arched eyebrows. He has a straight nose, and his pale coral-pink lips are closed. His nickel-gray hair is curled along his ears and pulled back with an olive-green bow at the nape of his neck. His large hat is pushed back over his forehead, away from us, so its wide brim creates a dark circle around his face. The lapels of his steel-blue, tight-fitting jacket are folded back over a high, white collar. The edge of the white shirt also shows at the cuff of his right hand. The elbow closer to us rests on what might be a piece of light gray paper or piece of fabric, over a cranberry-red cloth or the arm of the upholstered chair. His left hand, farther from us, is propped on a wood frame or board, to which a small, white, square cloth appears to be affixed or draped. The light falls strongly from our upper left so his profile is brightly lit against the dark shadows on the far side of his face. The background darkens from light, slate blue to our left to coffee brown to our right.

A row of about a dozen men and women sit, stand, or stroll along a sandy beach beneath a pale blue sky in this horizontal landscape painting. The scene is loosely painted so many of the facial features and other details are indistinct. The women wear dresses with long sleeves and skirts in shades of charcoal gray, parchment brown, vivid red, sapphire blue, or white. Five of them shade themselves with black parasols, and a woman to the right uses a white parasol with a topaz-blue interior. The men wear dark suits and straw-yellow hats. Another group of people clustered closer to the water to the right are even more loosely painted. A few people seem to wade out into the water, and dark smudges near the horizon suggest sailboats and one steamer. The horizon comes about two-thirds of the way up this composition, and the water and sky are similar tones of muted, ice blue. The artist signed the lower left corner, “E. Boudin.”
