Record of Activities and Research Reports, June 2022–May 2023

This year, the Center’s residential community is affiliated with institutions in the United States, Canada, and Italy, with representation across 18 states and the District of Columbia. From 17th-century Dutch and Chinese art exchanges to ancient narratives of madness, to Latin American video art, to the performance of Indigenous feminist futures in Native American art, this year’s cohort is broadening our understanding in myriad art-historical and architectural fields.

Record of Activities and Research Reports, June 2021–May 2022

This year the Center fellows’ research covered topics such as the emergence of coin-based silver jewelry in the newly created Navajo reservation, the art of brass in the Burgundian Netherlands, historical representations of Palestinian flora, and the impact of art and artists on histories of psychiatric reform. Center programs included lectures, symposia, a book signing, and fellows’ presentations, marked by a return to in-person programming in the spring of 2022.

Record of Activities and Research Reports, June 2020–May 2021

This year the Center welcomed fellows in residence affiliated with institutions in the United States and United Kingdom. Fellowships were virtual, with members offered the option to either safely relocate to Washington, DC, or remain remote. Their research topics included life drawing in 19th-century Latin American academies of art, the intersections of classical French painting and imperial Ottoman aesthetics, the role and relationship of sacred geographies in Mughal temple architecture and politics, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church as a pivotal patron of art and architecture from the Reconstruction era into the 20th century, among others.
