Overview: On view were paintings and sketches by artists on Pacific battlefields, from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. Selected from more than 4,000 works by 130 Marine artists, 138 paintings were shown as well as watercolors, drawings, sketches, and cartoons by 22 combat artists. Also included were sketches by a Japanese prisoner of war, depicting United States Marines in action. The United States Marine Corps sponsored and funded the exhibition to mark the 170th anniversary of the Marine Corps' founding on November 10.
